Hi! I absolutely love my Cricut, because of the endless crafting and project possibilities The first step is getting yourself a Cricut machine.
If you have a Cricut, and it's still in the box, it's time to break it out! I promise you, that first step is by far the hardest! For those of you that may have started some projects, but consider yourself a beginner, this blog is also for you :) Below are my "must haves" for getting started with a Cricut project.
First of all, I love my carrying bag/tote. I purchased this cute bag off of Amazon, and it holds all of my essentials. I stuff the front pockets with my tool kits, pens, and blades. The cords fit nicely in the top of the bag, and there are straps to secure the Cricut machine in.
VINYL or CARDSTOCK: Depending on what Cricut machine you purchased, there are a large variety of materials that the Cricut can cut (cork, faux leather, wood, etc). However, I think starting off you should start with a simple material like vinyl or cardstock. A lot of people don't give cardstock enough attention, but it is great for scrapbooking, creating cards, or even layered images!!! Vinyl is a very popular option for a material. Permanent vinyl can be used on hard, smooth surfaces (like a glass, or a tumbler) and heat transfer vinyl is most popular for making tee shirts (but it can also be used on wood and cardstock!!). I think once you determine what type of project you are working on, you will be able to figure out which material you need. I recommend when you get started that you purchase a variety pack, so that you have multiple colors available for your projects :) You can purchase variety packs on Amazon. I used to only buy exclusively Cricut brand vinyl because it is easy to work with, and holds up well, but it can be a little more expensive than other brands. I have also used Oracle (permanent vinyl), random holographic/color changing vinyl, Siser (HTV) and have had really good luck with the heat transfer vinyl from Hobby Lobby. I made a t shirt for my son with the HTV from Hobby Lobby (which comes at a good price) and it has held up/been through the washer for multiple washes (and hold your breath....I do put in in the dryer on heat too!) for over a year now. Still looks good as new!!!
Cricut Cutting Mats There are three different types of cutting mats (blue, purple, green). You would choose a mat based on the material that you are cutting. I almost always use the green (standard grip) cutting mats for my vinyl/cardstock cuts, but you could possibly use the blue mats (light grip). You can sometimes get a good deal on a multi-pack at Amazon, or when Cricut supplies go on sale. I have seen some people try to wash and reuse their mats, but Cricut warns against that. I believe I read somewhere that if you try to wash your mats, you may void the warranty on your Cricut machine.
This is a great starter tool kit for your Cricut projects, it's the kit that I have started with. I use the tweezers for multiple materials, they are actually great with perler beads!!! It's handy to have an extra pair of scissors, and the spatula helps to move the material from the mat with little curling. The weeding and burnish tools are prefect for working with vinyl :)
I find a paper trimmer to be essential for your Cricut projects (it cuts vinyl too!). Pictured is the exact one that I own. It is great for measuring and making sure that you have a STRAIGHT, perfect cut every time! You can purchase this paper trimmer using the link above.
